Yes, that has happened to me before.
It's kind of hard to explain - basically, websites send data out to however many people are viewing that website. If you have a popular website, you need a large server (which costs a lot) in order to send the information to everyone's computers. Here, too many people were on AJ, and the server was overloaded. So the server doesn't send enough info to your computer, and you end up with something that looks like it belongs in an ancient mobile browser. Not fun.
